Y éstas empezaron cuando se vieron arrancados de cuajo de su idílica vida al perder a sus padres en un misterioso incendio; desde entonces su pérfido tío, el conde Olaf, el mago de los disfraces, los persigue sin descanso para robarles su herencia.En La villa vil, los huérfanos Baudelaire han ido a parar a un pueblo perdido donde hay cuervos hasta en la sopa. Creen que allí están secuestrados unos amigos, los trillizos Quagmire –los dos que quedan vivos– y pretenden rescatarlos. Sin embargo, en la vil villa los obligan a trabajar casi como esclavos y, por si fuera poco, les acusan del supuesto asesinato del conde Olaf. Éste no sólo no ha muerto, sino que se presenta con las más aviesas intenciones, a saber: matar a dos de ellos porque con uno le basta para quedarse con la herencia. Violet, Klaus y Sunny tendrán que utilizar toda su inteligencia y sus recursos para escapar de unos y otros; aunque, conociendo su suerte, podemos aventurar que saldrán de una para caer en otra.
